My name is Jalisa. 33-years young and in my fourth year of birth work.
Currently, I work as a paraeducator in an elementary classroom and at my local Boys & Girls Club. I am also enrolled to receive my Master’s in Special Education with a specialty in Trauma & Resilience.
What Called Me to This Work?
I have always been fascinated with babies and pregnancy. I was 12 when I attended my first birth, my oldest niece and it was a life-changing experience. My education and work experience have solidified my desire in working with families, helping them strengthen their foundations as they recover from generational traumas to raise their babies.
Why am I a Good Doula?
I am a nurturer at heart. Pair that with my case manager and social services background, and I am a natural for working with clients, and helping them explore their birth options. Inquisitive by nature, I make it a point to share knowledge with clients so that they are able to make well-informed choices during the pregnancy, labor, and postpartum phases.
What is My Birth Philosophy?
Part of being successful in my work comes from taking a trauma-informed approach with my families, which means together we identify any preexisting events that may be affecting the families’ welfare.
I believe that everyone has the right to quality care, in any setting, with all the necessary information for them to make the best decisions for their healthcare. This includes receiving care from unbiased medical professionals and also being able to speak up when that care is not being delivered.
